Final Project

Project – Please select one to complete:

1) Sergeant Sonji is a master poet, and through him Nick learns about the Japanese form of poetry called haiku – a short, unrhymed poem often about nature. Experiment with writing your own haiku, following the format. The haiku can be about the entire book, a single character or single event:
a. First line: 5 syllables
b. Second line: 7 syllables
c. Third line: 5 syllables
d. Write a haiku for the book and print it out. Then put it into http://www.wordle.net/ to create an image of your poem.

2) Create a cartoon or storyboard on how elephants are trained. (Chapter 6 in the book described it in detail.)

3) Research Burmese neck rings. Research at least 3 questions you want to know the answers too and think of a creative way to explain your findings.

Homework for Friday

Homework based on reading for Friday:

For Friday's class, complete the reading on the homework page and post one question to discuss with the class. 

Again, it can be an "I wonder" question,  or ask how people were feeling at different points in the text, ask questions about parts that confused you, or ask questions about possible predictions. 

Good job thinking of discussion questions for Wednesday.  Please remember to proofread you writing BEFORE you publish your post (Make sure character's name's are capitalized, sentences look like sentences...)  Also click on the anonymous button, but remember to put your first name only in the post before you publish it too.

Part Two: p. 126-205

Assignment:

1) Read all of part two entitled "Hawk's Nest". (DO NOT READ AHEAD!!)

2) Write up 2 questions you would like to discuss with the group. They can be "I wonder" questions, questions about parts you don't understand, questions about predictions, or sharing a passage and asking people what they felt of thought when they read it.

3) As soon as one question is posted, no one can use the same idea.

Part One: chapters 1-4 (pgs. 1-41)

1) While reading these chapters keep track of all the Burmese words you come across. Create a list; on the list write the word, the page, and its definition.
For example: singoung (p. 11) = a foreman in charge of all timber elephants and mahouts in the plantation (Nang is this person.)

2) Also answer the following questions in COMPLETE sentences on a separate piece of paper, or you could copy and paste them into a word document and then answer them:
Chapter 1: Who is Taung Baw and why is he a legendary figure?
Chapter 2: What do you learn about the political situation in Burma from the discussion between Nang and Magwe?
Chapter 3: What qualities does Nick share with his ancestors?
Chapter 4: Why doesn't Nick tell anyone about what happened to him? What does this say about his character?
